What is the CPNRE?

The CPNRE is the entry-to-practice exam that practical nursing graduates write to become licensed as Licensed/Registered Practical Nurses across most Canadian provinces and territories. (Ontario and British Columbia use a different exam — the REx-PN — so if you’re in one of those two, head there instead.)

It’s designed to confirm you have the competencies to practise safely as a new practical nurse. Think of it less as a content dump and more as a safety check: can you assess, prioritize, and act appropriately?

How the exam is structured

The CPNRE is a multiple-choice exam covering the core areas of practical nursing practice — things like professional practice, the foundations of nursing, collaborative care, and the nurse-client relationship across the lifespan. Exam length, format, and the number of questions can change over time, so confirm the current structure with the official source before you sit it.

How to prepare

• Practice questions over rereading. The exam tests judgment, so the best prep is answering practice questions and understanding why each answer is right or wrong.
• Know your scope. A lot of CPNRE questions hinge on what’s within a practical nurse’s role and when to involve someone else. Be clear on your scope of practice.
• Brush up on safety and prioritization. Med safety, infection control, and “who do you see first” thinking show up everywhere.
